Manager's CornerAugust 2008 The Manager's Reportby Jim Penney, General Manager The Story County Fair is over again, and what a wonderful time it was to get a chance to interact with the youth of Story County. It sure is great to spend some time with the young people and their 4-H & FFA projects to see how vibrant the interest in agriculture is. I was able to spend some time at the fair visiting with some of the parents and some of the exhibitors. I certainly feel the time parents spent with their children on their projects is very beneficial. They certainly exhibited some very good projects. The cooperative system certainly does a good job of supporting 4-H.On Tuesday July 22nd the Heart of Iowa Board of Directors and the SCE Board of Directors had a joint board tour. They toured the SCE facilities at Newton, Grinnell, New Sharon, and Sully. The group also toured the HOIC facilities. Some of the highlights at SCE were the service station in Sully with 5 fulltime mechanics, an on-farm tire service truck, and the large size feed mill at Grinnell. SCE also has a lumber yard in Sully and has a fulltime construction service crew. The SCE Board was impressed with our facilities at each of our locations and also commented about the friendliness of our personnel. Our location managers and employees have done an excellent job of mowing, trimming and cleaning up the facilities and equipment. Progress on the facilities at S-14 is coming along quite well. The office has been dry walled, textured and painted, and the electricians are working as well. Progress on the geothermal heating and cooling is going well. Scheduled completion date is September 1st. We would hope to move our corn receiving personnel into the office shortly after September 1st so all of our harvest corn from the Roland and McCallsburg area could go into the S-14 Location. We are in the process of cleaning all of our bins in the north elevator in Roland and the wood elevator in McCallsburg so that we can fill both of those facilities with soybeans this fall. At harvest all deliveries of beans from the Roland and McCallsburg area will go to Roland and McCallsburg and all the corn from these areas will go to S-14.
