Manager's CornerMay 2008 The Manager's Reportby Jim Penney, General Manager We have certainly seen some vast changes in the costs involved in the in putting in the crop for this spring. With the price of crude oil topping $120/barrel, all of our costs have risen significantly. I think we would have been happy with $4.50 corn, $11.00 beans and $80.00 crude. But as I have heard before, "The cure for high prices is high prices". I would hope that all of our farmers are taking advantage of these prices so that some of the risk involved can be controlled. At this time, I would say that 45 percent of the corn has been planted, and some of the beans in parts of our southern area have been planted. If you look at last year’s calendar we found ourselves in the same situation. The rest of the corn was planted by May 20th. We still harvested a lot of 175+ bushel corn with those delayed planting dates. These new varieties of corn have certainly been proven to yield in adverse conditions. To be in agriculture, we must be eternal optimists, and I have found that we are much happier if we do our best and leave to rest up to Mother Nature. I think our agronomy and energy teams have done a great job at staying ahead of the planters. We have worked through last weekend and probably will this weekend as well. If you will work with our people, they will do their best to meet your needs. A little advance notice would sure be appreciated, but we also understand the wet weather makes it hard to predict what you may need tomorrow. We have had enough dry weather to get the ground work done for our new office and warehouse at S-14. In the next week we hope to get the footings poured and get started on the construction. We plan to have an open house-member appreciation event in early September to showcase our facilities at S-14 so you all can see how we have invested your equity. As the summer approaches I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and successful spring season. News from the ManagerSorry, no articles were found.
